Microplastics: Small Particles, Big Threat

چکیده

You have probably heard that plastic pollution is becoming a big problem for the environment, and especially oceans. When piece of reaches sea, seawater sunlight make it slowly fall apart into tiny particles. These small particles are called microplastics even smaller than ladybug—and sometimes not visible. Scientists found many marine animals mistake these food eat them! But what about in coral reefs? Many reefs, including corals giant clams, fixed to bottom sea cannot move. So, they escape from literally “raining down” on them. Recently, we discovered reef only eating microplastics, but plastics can also stick their bodies like flies flypaper!

Small Bite, Big Threat: The Burden of Vector-borne Diseases

"Vector-borne disease" is the term commonly used to describe an illness caused by an infectious microbe which is transmitted to people by blood-sucking arthropods and more than half of the global populations are at risk of these infections (1). The disease accounts for 17% of estimated global burden of all infectious diseases. (2). According to the recent estimates, malaria kills more than 600 ...

Tupleware: "Big" Data, Big Analytics, Small Clusters

There is a fundamental discrepancy between the targeted and actual users of current analytics frameworks. Most systems are designed for the challenges of the Googles and Facebooks of the world— processing petabytes of data distributed across large cloud deployments consisting of thousands of cheap commodity machines. Yet, the vast majority of users analyze relatively small datasets of up to sev...

Plastics and microplastics in the oceans: From emerging pollutants to emerged threat.

Plastic production has increased dramatically worldwide over the last 60 years and it is nowadays recognized as a serious threat to the marine environment. Plastic pollution is ubiquitous, but quantitative estimates on the global abundance and weight of floating plastics are still limited, particularly for the Southern Hemisphere and the more remote regions. Some large-scale convergence zones o...
